If by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people - their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties - someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal." - John F. Kennedy
Acceptance Speech as the Democratic presidential nominee (15 July 1960)

Political ROUNDUP
Sunday - July 20, 2008

Sun City Democratic Residents Display Creative Political Signs
Residents in Sun City may obtain distinctive political yard signs courtesy of their local Democratic club leaders. Obama '08 and Julie Bornstein signs may be obtained from Al Salvowitz at ALMA1959@aol.com. The McCain = Bush sign is available from Art Horwitz at arthurhorwitz@aol.com. For more information email Suzan Wilkinson at Swilkin196@aol.com.

Democratic Clubs recognize Volunteer of the Year award recipients
The Desert Stonewall Democrats have recognized Bill Gonzales as their Volunteer of the YearDemocrats in Sun City Palm Desert have selected Aiko Backhus as their "Volunteer of the Year". Both will be honored, along with those from other Riverside Democratic Clubs, during the September 20th annual Gary H. Bosworth Awards Dinner at the Morongo Resort and Spa.

80th Assembly District Candidate Manuel Perez Campaign Team Lineup
The entire Manuel Perez for Assembly senior campaign staff was presented during the July 19th membership meeting of the Democrats of the Desert. Candidate Perez provided the 70+ members in attendance with a message filled with enthusiasm that won many rounds of applause from the audience. Afterwards he introduced campaign staff members Louis Sanchez, Carlos Gonzales, Richard Oberhaus, Tracy Turner and Beth Caskie (who was not present). Oberhaus previously served in the Greg Pettis for Assembly campaign, Turner is active in the Veterans for Peace movement, and Caskie is Vice President-Programs for Democrats of the Desert. Sanchez, Gonzales and Caskie all worked for the Perez candidacy during the primary campaign.

Riverside County Democratic Party has new leadership
Members newly elected or re-elected to the Riverside County Democratic Central Committee held their organizational meeting on July 14th and chose a new leadership panel. Those elected were Betty McMillion (from Pass Democratic Club) as Chair, Bob Mahlowitz (from Stonewall Democratic Club) as Vice Chair, Carole Schaudt (from Palm Desert Greens Democratic Club) as Recording Secretary, Jackie Atwood (from Pass Democratic Club) as Treasurer, and Susan Dye (from Democratic Club of Southwest Riverside County) as Corresponding Secretary. The previous activities of this organization have proved that life, though not as we know it, manages to exist in a vacuum. Their unheralded record of accomplishment bears testimony to an organizational modesty that remains unmatched. Accomplishment, though it eludes them, continues to be a goal. Perhaps their 2008-2009 achievement record will be different.

Voter Registration Program Continues To Expand
The number of Democratic club voter registration sites in the valley has risen to twenty-three. The effort is being supported by Democrats in Sun City-Palm Desert, Democrats of the Desert, Desert Stonewall Democrats, Palm Springs Democratic Club, Democratic Women of the Desert, Palm Desert Greens Democratic Club, and Trilogy Democratic Club. For more information contact Sun City's Suzan Wilkinson at 760-200-4126 or email at Swilkin196@aol.com.

Democratic Activists seeking seats on Palm Desert City Council
Democratic 45th Congressional District primary candidate David Hunsicker continues his quest to enter public service. The retired Air Force Lt. Colonel has announced plans to run for a seat on the Palm Desert City Council. He's been joined by Riverside County Democratic Central Committee member Carole Schaudt, who has also expressed her intent to seek a seat on the council. They'll be competing against at least three incumbents along with one or more others from the community.

City Council race in Cathedral City heating up
Current Cathedral City council member Paul Marchand has begun the serious work of campaigning to replace the incumbent city Mayor. Democratic political candidate newcomers Don Thompson and Ron Garcia are running for City Council seats and word on the street is that incumbent Council Member Greg Pettis will also be seeking re-election.

Equality California 2008 Palm Springs Equality Awards
The Equality California October 18th dinner at Palm Springs Convention Center is set to honor Dear Abby. Single ticket admission is $350 however, Desert Stonewall Democrats have reserved a couple of tables and seats, while they last, are $250 per person.
