Democrats in Sun City

SUN CITY DEMOCRATS SUMMER NEWSLETTER
Summer is almost over and we are entering the most important two months of the Presidential election. September and October are full of action-packed events. Here’s what is coming:
SIX WEEK VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE
The Democratic Clubs of the Coachella Valley will be conducting voter registration at twenty-five sites from September 6 through October 19. Democrats in Sun City Palm Desert is responsible for 3 sites: Ralph’s in Bermuda Dunes, Wal-Mart and Stater Brothers in La Quinta. Volunteers are needed to staff each site. If you would like to help, please attend voter registration training at 2 PM on Saturday, August 30, in the Lakeview Clubhouse. For further information and to sign up for the training call Art Horwitz at 345-2315 or email him at arthurhorwitz@aol.com.

YARD SIGN CAMPAIGN
Barack Obama and Julie Bornstein yard signs are available. We know that some folks think their neighbors will be mad at them if they display their Democratic Party affiliation but real neighbors respect each other’s right to self-expression. Moreover, there are more than 2,000 Democrats in Sun City Palm Desert and another 900 decline to state voters. So, don't assume that your neighbors are Republicans. We will deliver the signs, put them up and retrieve them at the end of the election. Al Savlowitz is heading the yard sign campaign. You can get a jump on things by calling him at 360-1874 or emailing him at alma1959@aol.com.

The Bosworth dinner, honoring Sun City Palm Desert Volunteer of the Year, Aiko Backhus, is being held at the Morongo Casino Hotel in Cabazon on Saturday, September 20 beginning at 5:30 PM. The cost is $100 and the guest speaker will be Eric Bauman, Chairperson of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party. Let’s fill a table with Aiko’s friends and celebrate all that she has done for our club. If you are interested contact Jess Stoddart at 345-0552 or jlstoddart@aol.com

There will be nibbles, wine and soft drinks. There is no charge but please bring your checkbooks and contribute something to Julie’s campaign. Let’s make this House Party the best attended in the Coachella Valley and show Julie that we are behind her. Feel free to invite neighbors and friends. It is a great opportunity to hear Julie talk about the issues and her campaign. RSVP Jess Stoddart at 345-0552 or jlstoddart@aol.com.
SENATOR BARBARA BOXER AT BORNSTEIN FUNDRAISER
The Sun City Democrats will host a fundraiser for Julie Bornstein in the Sierra Ballroom on Saturday, October 11 from 4:30 to 7. The cost has yet to be set. Coachella Valley Democratic clubs are joining together for this event. Senator Barbara Boxer will speak on the need to send Julie to Congress. TURNING THE VALLEY BLUE
Voter registration has been leaning more and more Democratic here in the Valley in the last several elections, helped along by the kind of voter registration work that Sun City is engaged in. It is producing results:
______________________________________________________________________________
THE 80TH ASSEMBLY DISTRICT:
DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE, MANUEL PEREZ
The 80th Assembly District has a DEMOCRATIC MAJORITY. There are 80,539 Democrats to 61,876. Republicans. The California Democratic Party has made the 80th Assembly District the number one priority seat to win in the Assembly elections. Manuel Perez has the money, three campaign headquarters and field staff. He will be helped by 6 full-time staff from the Southwest Voter Registration Project who will be registering voters in Imperial County. Things are looking good for Manuel Perez. Manuel will be at our September 22 meeting to discuss his campaign.

DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE, JULIE BORNSTEIN
We're not a majority in the 45th Congressional District but Democrats have been making incredible progress toward pulling even with Republican registration in this district. Since 2003, the Republican advantage has been cut in half, from 37,000 to 18,000. We are hoping our registration drives that are going on in Moreno Valley and Imperial County as well as here will bring this discrepancy down to less than 10,000. With 51,680 Decline to State voters, highly attracted to the need for change, we really can take the seat this time.
Another major plus for our chances in the 45th is that the Obama, Bornstein and Perez campaigns have integrated their operations for this election. This is truly historic for the Coachella Valley. Julie and Manuel are sharing offices in Palm Springs and Coachella. Both candidates are using the Democratic Headquarters in Cathedral City where their campaign literature, buttons, signs and T-shirts are available.

The 37TH SENATE DISTRICT:
DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE, ARTHUR GUERRERO
This is still a very tough district with a Republican majority of 188,564 to a Democratic registration of 159,103. Democrats are closing the gap here as elsewhere and our registration drive will help. John Benoit is Art’s opponent. The wild card in the district is a Declines to State registration of 73,000, almost 17% of the district.
Unfortunately, neither the State nor the County Party is putting money into this contest. Art is running a good campaign on a shoestring. We need to thank him for standing as a candidate and using much of his own resources to represent a Democratic vision for the district. Art will be attending the Sun City Palm Desert September general meeting. Show up and give him your support.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST:
SEPTEMBER 22 GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
The board of Sun City Palm Desert is gearing up for our first of the season meeting on Monday, September 22 from 6:30-8:30 in the Lakeview Community Center. All Democratic candidates for partisan and non-partisan office will be there, except Senator Obama. We chose September for the Candidates Meeting since the vast majority of Democrats in Sun City Palm Desert vote by mail. These ballots will start arriving after October 6.
In addition to the candidates, John Eldridge of the Palm Springs and Stonewall Democrats will speak on the Marriage Initiative, Proposition 8. The State Party has taken a firm stand against this initiative that limits the civil rights of the large number of Californians who are gay or lesbian.
A list of Party endorsements on the other propositions, along with a brief description of them will be handed out at the meeting and will also be available on our website, http://www.scpdca.com/residentgroups/democrats/home.htm.

According to Frank Schubert, 'Yes on 8' campaign manager, the mobilization of LDS (Mormon) volunteers could save his campaign up to $26 million in costs related to micro-targeting persuadable voters.

So much for campaign finance rules.

Just a heads up: Mike Huckabee recently gave an interview in which he holds Mitt Romney responsible for implementing gay marriage in Massachusetts.

Welcome to the ProtectMarriage.com coalition.
I wish that more rank and file members of the LDS (Mormon) church would realize: the anti-gay coalition they've joined in California is one that includes folks who - given the chance - would vote their church out of existence.
Folks like Mike Huckabee and his Evangelical buddies.
