Inauguration Day - A new beginning

Palm Springs, California.
Today, Inauguration Day, was an event I've been anticipating for more than a year. For me the events that started out this morning were as much about the end of a time of serious national division as it was the inauguration of President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. In the ill-famed words of another, I too feel like saying "Mission Accomplished!", for I believe my dreams of hope and betterment for this country have begun to come true.

This was a party day for me - one that saw planning start last month before Christmas. A dear friend opened her home to mutual friends and 26 of us gathered starting at 8 a.m. to celebrate together. We toasted President Obama and Vice President Biden with champaign Mimosas while sharing a continental breakfast. The multi-hour event included lots of cheering, accompanied by kazoo "music", heads bowed during prayers, and ritual standing for the actual swearing-in ceremony and the National Anthem (which many of us sang). Afterwards, we gathered outside next to a life size cardboard replica of President Obama for group photos. It was one of the nicest mornings I've experienced and it's left me filled with feelings of optimism and good cheer.

How about your own day? Did you party with friends, spend the time with family or was this pretty much a nonevent for you?

Like you, so many of us were ready for January 20, 2009. We had worked hard, together and we were ready to celebrate, together.
The Democrats of the Desert invited club members, volunteers, anyone interested to join us at 8:15 in the morning in the Tierra Del Sol Senior Center in Cathedral City. There was a big screen tv, lots of food to nibble on, juice, coffee. Over 60 people joined in to watch and shed a tear or two. Our newly elected 80th AD Assembly man, Manuel Perez stopped by as well as Mayor of Coachella Eduardo Garcia and the wonderful Julie Bornstein. We watched, we laughed, we cried and we will long remember that very special day in history.
